Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal endocrine disorder which can result in hirsutism (terminal course, thick, black hairs). Hirsutism is just one of the many side effects of PCOS. It presents itself by producing overly excessive male hair growth patterns on a woman's face, neck, and body. Hirsutism is a common symptom of PCOS and occurs in women with insulin resistance. It is also linked to having higher levels of hormones in the body. When this happens, it causes an imbalance in the reproductive hormones which then creates problems in the ovaries to such an extent that the body is no longer able process insulin properly. When high hormone levels are secreted through the ovaries, follicles will stimulate new hair growth. Overstimulated ovaries produce excessively high levels of insulin, which largely stimulate and overproduce both androgen and testosterone hormones that will result in unwanted hormonal hair growth. If left untreated, this symptom will only worsen and over time become unmanageable.
